PR Card Renewal, Stay Travel-Ready. Stay Compliant.

Renewing Your PR Card: A Crucial Step for Reentry

As a Canadian permanent resident, your status remains valid even without an active PR card—but your ability to travel does not.

A valid PR card is essential for re-entering Canada via commercial carriers such as airplanes, trains, or ships. If you’re planning any international travel, ensuring your PR card is up to date is critical.

When Should You Apply?

The ideal time to renew your PR card is within six months of its expiry.
You can apply after it expires, but if you're outside Canada at that point, re-entry may be difficult without a valid card or travel document.

Understanding the Residency Obligation

When you apply to renew your PR card, IRCC will reassess your residency status—not just your documents.

To maintain your PR status, you must have spent at least 730 days (2 years) in Canada within the last five years.

If you’ve spent extended time abroad, you may still meet the requirement if:

  • You accompanied a Canadian citizen spouse or partner abroad

  • You were employed full-time by a Canadian business overseas

  • You had compelling personal or humanitarian reasons

In such cases, clear documentation is essential.

Required Documents

A typical application will include:

  • Front and back copies of your current PR card

  • Valid ID (e.g., passport)

  • Travel history over the past 5 years (entry/exit records)

  • Proof of Canadian residence (e.g., address history, tax filings, employment)

  • Any documents explaining extended absences from Canada

Note: IRCC may request additional evidence or an interview depending on your case.

When to Seek Professional Support

If you’ve spent significant time outside Canada, or your records are complex, renewal can be more than a formality.
